The German University in Cairo invites applications for vacancies to be filled effective in February 2025.
The Faculty of Applied Science and Arts enrolls 1,250 students across three design majors: Graphic, Product and Media Design. The Design Workshops are an interdisciplinary department and are an important resource, where students conduct experiments, realize assignments, create design prototypes, and participate in research.
The Faculty seeks a recent graduate interested in deepening their academic profile with specialist craft experience in the field of Bookbinding.
N.B This position needs to be filled for one semester only.
Job Description:
Assisting the acting Workshop Supervisor in the Bookbinding Workshop in all aspects of workshop management, thereby expanding the capacity, efficiency and creative profile of the workshop. As part of a team, the Teaching Assistant will work together with the supervisors and Head of Department to design courses and assignments, relevant to the needs of the faculty in particular those of the Graphic Design Department and Product Design Department. He/she will report to the Workshop Supervisors and to the Head of the Department.
Responsibilities:
• Assist the workshop supervisor in all aspects of workshop management, thereby expanding the capacity, efficiency and creative profile of the workshops.
• Conduct regular introductory and advanced courses for students according to the schedule and supervise individual student projects.
• Monitor safety and health regulations, plan workshop investments and supervise material purchase.
• Contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching.
Experience/skills:
• A creative professional and design graduate with experience in a specialist craft.
• Knowledge in Mathematics.
• Ability to structure and define project goals in order to foster and motivate positive experiences.
• Ability to work well with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional experience and aesthetic sensibilities.
• An interest in supporting and conducting research activities in the workshops and connect them to design.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills in English, which is the teaching language.
• Good management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively.
• An interest in working collaboratively within the GUC and with external partners towards the development of shared projects.
Requirements:
A Bachelor degree or equivalent in the field of Graphic Design/Product Design, book design, bookbinding techniques, packaging, or in a design related discipline.
Proven experience and knowledge of more than one of the following craft areas: Evidence of previous workshop experience; InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Microsoft Excel and Word; attentive to details; ability to do physical work.
