The German University in Cairo hosted the international conference IEEE FISTS 2026 (Forum on Innovative Sustainable Transportation Systems), organized by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. This marks the first time the conference has been held in Africa and the Middle East since its launch in 2011.

Hosting this international event reflects GUC’s advanced academic standing both regionally and globally in the fields of technology and innovation, and highlights Egypt’s growing role in hosting specialized global scientific events focused on smart and sustainable transportation.

The conference served as a scientific and practical platform to explore the latest smart solutions for transportation systems, particularly in light of increasing global challenges related to climate change and the transition toward more sustainable cities. Sessions focused on developing transportation systems that are more efficient and environmentally friendly, including zero-emission vehicles, sustainable infrastructure, battery management systems, connected and autonomous vehicles, and the integration of renewable energy and clean fuels in transportation. Research papers also addressed land vehicles, public transportation systems, shared mobility, smart charging systems, environmental impact assessment, carbon emission reduction strategies, and improving operational efficiency.

The conference featured a distinguished group of international speakers, including Mohan M. Trivedi from the University of California, San Diego, Chris Mi from San Diego State University, and Matthew Barth from University of California, Riverside, along with other global experts in intelligent transportation systems, sustainable mobility, and vehicle electrification, who shared forward-looking insights shaping the future of smart transportation.

Dr. Omar Mahmoud Shehata, Professor at the Mechatronics Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering and Materials Science at GUC and Chair of FISTS 2026, emphasized that the conference comes at a critical time amid global environmental challenges related to climate change, highlighting the latest smart and innovative solutions aimed at improving transportation efficiency and supporting the transition toward a more sustainable future.

Dr. Catherine Malak Elias, Assistant Professor at the Computer Science Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering and Media Technology at GUC and Head of the Scientific Program of the conference, stated that the event helped bridge perspectives between the international scientific community and regional researchers, especially in Egypt, contributing to shaping a future research roadmap that takes into account local challenges in developing intelligent transportation systems.

Hosting IEEE FISTS 2026 reinforces GUC’s role, in collaboration with IEEE, in supporting scientific and technological innovation, and underscores the importance of leveraging advanced technologies to build a more efficient and sustainable transportation future that serves society while preserving the environment.
