Floriane Eshak, a proud graduate of the German University in Cairo (GUC), has made history by becoming the first Egyptian to win the Solemn Thesis Award from the Chancellerie des Universités de Paris. This prestigious award, which honors the best PhD thesis in pharmacy in the Paris region, was on December 3, 2024, during a ceremony at the Sorbonne University in Paris.

Floriane completed her Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy at GUC in 2018, where she developed a deep passion for scientific research. Her journey continued in France, where she specialized in drug design using computer technology. Building on her strong foundation at GUC, Floriane went on to complete a Master's degree with distinction, followed by her groundbreaking PhD from Université Paris Cité in 2023. Her thesis, titled "Nanobodies Targeting mGlu Receptors as Novel Agents for Treating Schizophrenia," explored innovative methods in the design and development of nanobodies targeting mGlu receptors, key players in treating complex psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia.

Floriane’s academic journey was not without challenges, but she faced them with determination. "In France, PhD candidates are chosen by professors, who offer grants for the research. The topic I worked on was challenging, but the isolation and the adaptation to a new environment were among the hardest aspects. However, I overcame these obstacles by focusing intensely on my research," Floriane said. She used advanced computer software to guide her research and validated her findings through laboratory experiments, which confirmed the accuracy and potential of her work.

In addition to the Solemn Thesis Award, Floriane has been recognized at several international conferences for her groundbreaking contributions to the field. She hopes her research will inspire others, particularly in Egypt, to explore scientific topics that push the boundaries of knowledge. "My advice to pharmacy students and young researchers is to have confidence in themselves and understand that setbacks are part of the journey. Perseverance is key," she shared.

Floriane’s achievement is not only a personal triumph but also a moment of pride for the GUC community. Her success highlights the strength of GUC's academic programs in preparing students for world-class research and innovation. Floriane’s journey exemplifies the impact of a GUC education and the potential of our graduates to make a mark on the global stage.

As the first Egyptian to win this prestigious award, Floriane's victory serves as an inspiration for current and future GUC students. Her success underscores the value of pursuing advanced education and research opportunities abroad, and she is a proud representative of the GUC's commitment to excellence in education and research. Floriane Eshak is a shining example of the kind of leadership and innovation that GUC fosters in its graduates, and her contributions to pharmaceutical research promise to have a lasting impact on the global scientific community.
