This Course is offered to all 10th semester Majors
The course introduces the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), terminology and components, typical GIS input and output, data georeferencing, data transformations and data integration. GIS is addressed as a tool that supports design, planning, management and decision making processes, with emphasis on civil engineering applications. Geospatial raster and vector data models are presented. Roles of surveying, maps, satellite images and GPS within GIS are discussed. Geospatial data management, GIS functions and spatial analyses are delineated. Examples are presented for querying data, creating reports, graphs, thematic outputs, maps and layouts. GIS-based project development. Overviews and case studies are presented considering popular GIS areas of applications, current GIS developments and trends within civil engineering and related disciplines.
