This Course is offered to all 7th semester Majors
The course presents the broad knowledge for engineers about the topics of economics, ethics, and legislation. The first focus of this course is the application of economic analysis and decision theory to evaluate alternatives of planning, development, construction, and management of engineering projects. Topics are selected from the following: Principles of economic equivalence and interest; Time value of money; Analysis of economic alternatives; Depreciation, inflation, and taxes; Analysis of demand and supply; Decision theory, economic cost, and risk analysis; Break-even concepts The second focus is the discussion of ethical issues in engineering practice. Topics are selected from the following: Social and ethical responsibilities; Work and professional ethics; Codes of ethics; Malpractice and conflict of interest in engineering profession; Leadership and nature of values: Psychological values, Societal values, Aesthetic values, Moral and ethical values; Environmental ethics; Case studies. The third focus is the presentation of the legal aspects of professionalism and engineering contracts. Topics are selected from the following: The legal rule and application of law; Formal sources of law: statutory law, custom, natural law and rules of justice; Informal sources of law: jurisprudence, doctrine; Theory of Obligation: definition, forms, sources; Engineering contracts: parties, formation, validity, compensation of damage, contracting contract.
