Description
This Course is offered to all 6th semester Majors
This course is comprised of two themes: basics of foundation engineering design; and basic geotechnical laboratory tests and selected in-situ testing. The foundation engineering theme includes shallow foundation design. Coverage includes bearing capacity, settlement of foundation, design of retaining structures, and the concepts of earth pressure and slope stability. The laboratory and in-situ testing theme complements the understanding of basic geotechnical engineering and supply the needed design parameters. The in-situ testing includes subsurface exploration and sampling: methods of boring, basic field tests. The two themes combined effectively prepare the students for consulting in geotechnical engineering.
