Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering (CIS 501)

Course Prerequisites

Description

The aim of this course is to provide engineering students with the necessary/basic information about soils origin and physical characteristics and behavior. The course content includes an overview of the basic concepts of the mechanics of soils and fundamentals of application in engineering practice including: soil composition and texture; soil classification; compaction; stresses in soils; permeability and seepage; consolidation; settlement; shear strength; laboratory testing; and sub-surface exploration. The information content in this course is paramount for civil engineers to ensure their proper understanding of geotechnical engineering and to prepare them for interaction with other disciplines in civil engineering that interface with geotechnical engineering such as structural, transportation and hydraulics.
