Advanced Strategic Management (STRA 713)
Offered By:
Management Technology Faculty
Description
This course covers several topics that are at the fore of current scholarship and practice in strategy, including entrepreneurial strategy, organizational learning and cognitive approaches to management. These new approaches to strategy offer a very different perspective on strategic management than the classical approaches covered in the previous introductory strategy course. The course is designed to build a strong theoretical foundation for seniors majoring in strategic management that prepares them for advanced research in strategy. At the same time, the course material is of high practical relevance and introduces students to the real life issues and complex problems that managers face in contemporary business settings. A very important part of the course is the tutorial in which the participants will discuss important research findings presented in several seminal works from the strategy and management literature. The tutorial is structured in a seminar style. Every week an article is assigned for reading and class discussion. The discussion is led by a different group of students every time, and the tutor moderates and contributes to the discussion along with all the other class members. This format has the benefit of exposing the students to important pieces of literature, as well as allowing them to practice their critical thinking, analysis and discussion skills.
