Attorney General’s Office Hosts International Study Visit for Law Students

The Office of the Attorney General of Egypt hosted a distinguished educational study visit for 40 law students from Northumbria University (UK), the University of Vienna (Austria), and the German University in Cairo (GUC) from February 15th to 20th, 2025. The week-long visit provided participants with a deep understanding of Egypt’s judicial system, criminal law, and legal procedures, while also offering insights into its cultural and political landscape.

 

The visit began with a formal welcome from His Excellency Attorney General Mohamed Shawky and Chief Justice Ali Mokhtar. The students attended a series of expert-led lectures, covering key topics such as Egypt’s judicial system, criminal law, and international legal policies. Prof. Mohamed Badar offered insights into Egyptian criminal law from a comparative perspective, while Dr. Jasmine Moussa, Legal Counsel to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presented on Egypt’s international legal framework.

 

 

An insightful lecture was featured on the second discussing the enforcement of International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice rulings, with contributions from Prof. Nora Salem and Prof. Dr. Mohamed Badar. Students also participated in a seminar on “Justice and Law in Ancient Egyptian Civilization” led by Dr. Wassim El Sisi. Ambassador Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, provided a comprehensive overview of Egypt’s foreign policy and immigration challenges.

 

Cultural immersion was a key component of the program, with visits to iconic sites such as the Cathedral of the Nativity, the largest in the Middle East, and Masjid Misr, the world’s third-largest mosque. Additionally, the students participated in a paddle match at the Heliopolis Sporting Club, a social event organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

 

On day three, participants explored the historic Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, followed by a panel discussion on the intersection of law and emerging technologies, led by Prof. Dr. Michael Lysander and Dr. Sara El Deeb.

 

A lecture by Dr. Malvika Unnithan on children’s rights in armed conflict under international law was included on the fourth day. Students then visited the Egyptian Parliament, where they attended a session led by Speaker Hanafi el Gebaly. At the Ministry of Justice, His Excellency Adnan Al-Fangary, Minister of Justice, participated in an interactive Q&A with the students, offering insights into Egypt’s current legal challenges.

 

The visit concluded with a courtroom observation at the New Cairo Criminal Court and a tour of the Egyptian Supreme Constitutional Court. Students were also given a chance to experience the 10th of Ramadan Badr Correction and Rehabilitation Facility and attended a lecture on Migration and Asylum Law by Ambassador Dr. Namira Negmat.

 

The study visit was well-received by participants, who praised the program for its blend of academic rigor and cultural enrichment. The opportunity to interact with high-ranking judicial figures and policymakers offered valuable networking and professional development, while the cultural excursions deepened students' appreciation for Egypt’s history and legal heritage.
