GEM-CAP Symposium on Microbiome and Bioinformatics 2024

A symposium jointly organized by The German University in Cairo (GUC) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM)

November 30 - December 2, 2024 –Cairo, Egypt

GEM-CAP

The German-Egyptian Microbiome Research Capacity Building initiative (GEM-CAP) is a collaborative initiative between Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the German University in Cairo (GUC), funded by the DAAD Ta’ziz Partnership. The program is designed to advance microbiome research and promote scientific collaboration between Germany and Egypt. Through specialized training, workshops, and research exchanges, GEM-CAP aims to build research capacity in Egypt, facilitate knowledge transfer, and develop innovative tools for understanding the role of the microbiome in human health, particularly in gastrointestinal diseases. The program also seeks to foster a new generation of scientists equipped with cutting-edge skills in microbiome analysis and bioinformatics

Meet the Chairs:

Dr. Amira Metwaly (Co-PI, TUM) and Dr. Mohamed Hamed (Co-PI, GUC) serve as the co-chairs of the GEM-CAP symposium, leading the scientific and organizational efforts of the program

...
Dr. Amira Metwaly

Senior Scientist at the Core Facility Microbiome, Technical University of Munich (TUM) specializing in microbiome research, with a particular focus on gut microbiota and gastrointestinal diseases. With her extensive expertise in microbiome-host interactions and metagenomics, she brings a wealth of experience to GEM-CAP, helping bridge research collaboration between Germany and Egypt.

...
Dr. Mohamed Hamed

Professor at the German University in Cairo (GUC), he is an established researcher in the field of metagenomics and bioinformatics. His deep knowledge of bioinformatics and commitment to fostering scientific exchange between Egypt and Germany make him a key figure in the success of GEM-CAP.

Together, they are responsible for overseeing the strategic and scientific direction of GEM-CAP, while mentoring the next generation of microbiome researchers through hands-on training, workshops, and international exchange programs

Symposium Objectives:

  • Highlight recent breakthroughs in microbiome research.
  • Provide hands-on training in metagenomics and bioinformatics.
  • Strengthen academic exchange between Egypt and Germany.
