The international conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia is an ACM peer-reviewed annual conference that has been running since 2002. For the past 16 years, the conference was hosted in major cities across Europe, USA, China, and New Zealand. This year, we won the bid to host the 17th edition of the conference at the GUC for the first time in Africa and the Middle East.

In addition to this year’s number of submissions being amongst the highest in the conference history, the total number of registrations was the highest number of registered attendees achieved throughout the entire history of the conference (more than 80% of which were not Egyptian residents).

All the local preparations for the conference were organized and coordinated under the supervision of Prof. Slim Abdennadher by two of his TAs; Alia ElBolock and Mostafa Talaat. Their early preparations, dedication and the help and support provided by the various departments at the GUC made it possible for the conference to be a huge success. The feedback given by the attendees was overwhelmingly positive with some of them stating that it was the best conference experience they have ever had. This is true for both the quality of this version of the long-running MUM conference series and for conferences of the field in general.

One of the two prominent keynote speakers at the conference, Bo Begole, who is a Senior Engineering Manager, Augmented Reality UX at Apple Inc. in Silicon Valley, California even posted a testimony on his facebook account stating that “Cairo is a great place for a conference”.

Other testimonials from prominent researchers of the field on social media include: Prof Albrecht Schmidt from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich calling it “the biggest MUM conference in its 17 year history” and “probably most diverse” conference so far and that while it sounded like an adventurous decision to have it in Cairo last year, “it turned out to be a really good move.” Our international partners and the steering committee of the conference also testified that the impact of this year’s conference was very strong with the ACM due to its huge success and that they are very pleased that the conference was hosted at the GUC in Cairo and that it should definitely be done again with other conferences.
